Motor Claims
If you are involved in an accident, it is often very difficult to know what you should or should not do
and what details you need to obtain. Click on the following link to obtain our
What to do in the event of an accident leaflet
which you can print out and keep in your car to act as a reminder.
In the past, if you needed to make a claim on your policy, say as a result of
an accident or theft, you would have needed to fill in a claim form. This is no
longer the case and most companies have now done away with claim forms. Instead,
you now ring a claims help line and the company takes details of the incident over the
phone. This saves you time in filling in the form and the company can immediately set
about getting your car repaired. The company will usually try and steer you towards
one of their approved repairers. You do not have to use the approved repairer
although using them has advantages for everyone. For the customer,
it means that the repairer will usually supply you with a courtesy car for the duration
of the repair and when the car is returned to you, the work carries a guarantee.
For the insurance company, the work is concentrated in fewer places and it is easier
for their engineers to keep a track of what is going on.
The arrangement with these approved repairers is such that they will usually arrange to
pick up your car and drop off the courtesy car and do the reverse when the repair is complete.
The companies do not always mention this point so it is worth raising it with them if this
would be more convenient.
Although reporting an accident is now done direct, please do not forget that we are
still here to help you. Having phoned the help line, if you are at all unhappy in any way,
please give us a ring and we will try and put matters right on your behalf.
If an accident is not your fault, it may be necessary to claim your excess, other
out of pocket expenses or even compensation for personal injury from the party responsible.
In this situation, please ring us and we will arrange for your legal expenses insurers
(if you have paid the small extra charge for this cover) to pursue your claim. If there is
personal injury to yourself or your passenger, you will automatically get a free solicitor,
who is experienced in injury claims, to act on your behalf and you will always receive 100%
of the compensation which is due to you, without any deduction being made.
